Een cluster van zwarte glaskralen, kraal voor kraal opgebouwd in ons atelier. Van dichtbij is het kralenwerk; vanaf six feet afstand leest het als kaviaar — tientallen kleine zwarte rondjes, strak opeengepakt. Nieuwe en vintage kralen staan zij aan zij — matzwart tegen hoogglans, gefacetteerde slijpsels die flikkeren naast gladde gepolijste rondjes — zodat het zwart in lagen leest in plaats van plat te vallen. Elke kraal is met de hand geborduurd op een messing basis, verguld in 18K goud en verzegeld met een beschermende e-coat. Van bovenaf meet het cluster ongeveer two inches in doorsnede: grafisch, sculpturaal, onmiskenbaar avond. De band is verstelbaar, zodat één ring de meeste handen past.
Opmerking van de kunstenaar
“Ik heb deze kraal voor kraal opgebouwd, elke kraal met de hand bordurend in het atelier. Het is langzaam werk — het cluster groeit kraal voor kraal tot het goed zit. En ik heb hem verstelbaar gemaakt, want een cocktailring moet gemakkelijk zijn: één ring, de meeste handen.”
