A festival in a single strand. Hand-carved coral blooms — every bead cut with its own floral carving — alternate with faceted black onyx along the Meilin Necklace, raspberry red against jet black, like lanterns strung against a night sky. At 42 inches it falls in a true opera length, and the beads graduate as they descend: smaller and finer at the neck, larger and bolder toward the bottom.
The strand is built in stations. Two open silver-plated rings divide it, each one hand-wrapped in tiny black glass seed beads, and the pattern keeps changing its mind along the way: smooth coral rounds, carved coral bells and cones, crystal rondelles, onyx beads banded with pavé crystal, and two long faceted onyx teardrops. At the bottom, coral barrels and onyx rounds frame one final carved coral bloom at the center.
Designed in the USA; hand-assembled and finished in our West Hollywood studio. Each strand is strung by hand, and the carved coral varies bead to bead — no two are ever exactly alike.
Artist's Notes
Coral and onyx is an old pairing — the red for luck and celebration, the black for gravity. I built Meilin as one long procession of beads, and the silver rings are the pauses in it.
